Schweizerhof Zermatt is the hotel I would choose when I want Zermatt to be beautiful without making the logistics unnecessarily heroic.
It sits right on Bahnhofstrasse, essentially opposite the train station, which is a much bigger advantage than it sounds after a travel day involving children, ski bags and the final train into car-free Zermatt. The Gornergrat railway is right there, the village begins outside the front door, and you still get a proper indoor pool, winter kids club, ski room, rental services and family-friendly suites.
Schweizerhof is not the most remote, romantic or design-forward hotel in Zermatt. That is not its job. Its strength is that it makes an inherently complicated ski destination feel remarkably manageable.
For families, multigenerational trips and first visits to Zermatt, that can be worth quite a lot.

Why Schweizerhof Works So Well in Zermatt
Zermatt is magical. It is also car-free, spread across several different lift areas and reached by one final train journey after whatever journey you already took to Switzerland.
Location matters here.
Schweizerhof is approximately 50 meters from Zermatt station, right at the beginning of Bahnhofstrasse. You can arrive by train and essentially be at the hotel before anyone has time to ask how much farther they have to walk.
The Gornergrat railway is also immediately nearby, while the rest of the village, restaurants and shops are outside the door.
That makes Schweizerhof particularly appealing for first-time visitors and families who want to experience Zermatt rather than spend the week calculating how to get back to their hotel.
It is not ski-in/ski-out. If that is your priority, I would look at Riffelalp Resort 2222m instead.
But for many families, I would take this location over theoretical slope access that complicates every other part of the trip.
Which Schweizerhof Room Should You Book?
The room categories are relatively straightforward, but families should pay attention to the difference between a Junior Suite, Family Suite and Attic Suite.
Double Rooms
The standard Double Rooms are around 26 to 28 square meters and come with either a king or twin setup.
For couples, I would strongly consider paying for the Matterhorn-facing category if the rate difference is reasonable. You came all the way to Zermatt. The mountain is rather the point.
For families, I would keep moving down the room list.
Junior Suites
A Junior Suite, where the children sleep on the sofa bed in the same open space. Fine for a family of three, worth thinking about for four.
The Junior Suites sleep two adults and two children using a king or twin bed plus a large sofa bed.
The regular Junior Suites are approximately 30 to 34 square meters, while the Matterhorn View Junior Suites are significantly larger at roughly 40 to 48 square meters.
That difference matters.
If a family of four is actually going to spend a full ski week here, I would much rather have the larger Matterhorn View version than save a little money and spend six nights stepping around an open sofa bed.
Some Junior Suites can also connect to Double Rooms, which becomes much more interesting for families wanting two genuine sleeping spaces.
The Family Suite
For a family of four, this is probably where I would start.
The Family Suite is approximately 40 to 48 square meters with a separate bedroom and living room, where the children sleep on a large sofa bed. There is also a walk-in closet and a balcony or terrace.
It is still technically a one-bedroom suite rather than a true two-bedroom configuration, but the separate living room gives parents considerably more privacy than an open-plan Junior Suite.
That matters around 8:30 p.m. when the children are asleep and nobody wants to spend the rest of the evening sitting silently in the bathroom scrolling through their phone.
The Attic Suite
The Attic Suite living room, beams and green stove included. The one detail to know is the final level is reached by stairs rather than the elevator.
The Attic Suites are the largest accommodations at Schweizerhof, roughly 44 to 50 square meters, with a separate living space, fireplace and balcony.
They sleep two adults and two children.
I like the romance of this category, but there is one detail worth knowing before booking: the suites are on the fifth floor and require taking the elevator to the fourth floor and then using stairs for the final level.
For some travelers, irrelevant.
For someone traveling with a stroller, mobility concern or enough luggage to open a small sporting-goods store, not irrelevant at all.
What I Would Book
For a couple, I would choose a Matterhorn-facing room if the rate difference makes sense.
For a family of three, a Junior Suite is probably enough.
For a family of four staying several nights, I would compare the Family Suite with the larger Junior Suite Matterhorn View rather than simply choosing whichever is cheaper.
If you need actual separate bedrooms, I would ask about connecting configurations.
That is also exactly the kind of detail I would confirm before booking rather than discovering from a floor plan after the cancellation deadline.
Is Schweizerhof Zermatt Good for Families?
Very.
This is actually one of the strongest reasons to choose Schweizerhof over some of Zermatt’s cooler or more romantic alternatives.
During winter, the hotel operates a complimentary kids club for hotel guests ages 4 through 16. Children can eat there in the afternoon, and the hotel also offers a children’s dinner setup in the evening.
That is unusually useful in Zermatt.
A kids club does not need to occupy every minute of a family ski vacation to matter. Sometimes you simply want the children happily occupied for an hour while you use the spa or have a drink without discussing Minecraft.
The indoor pool is another major plus. Ski-school children have a remarkable ability to become exhausted on the mountain and then discover twelve additional hours of energy when they see a swimming pool.
Schweizerhof planned accordingly.
The Pool and Spa
The 12-meter indoor pool, which exists to absorb the energy ski-school children mysteriously rediscover at four in the afternoon.
The hotel has a 12-meter indoor swimming pool and two jacuzzis, which is exactly the sort of amenity I care about when choosing a ski hotel for families.
The pool is open to families, while the dedicated spa area is for guests ages 16 and older during spa hours.
For adults, there is a Finnish sauna, bio sauna, steam bath, relaxation area and treatments focused heavily on sports recovery and wellness.
The sauna area follows European spa customs and includes nude areas, which is worth knowing before arrival if Swiss spa culture is new to you.

Skiing From Schweizerhof
Schweizerhof is not a ski-in/ski-out hotel.
What it gives you instead is extremely easy access to Zermatt’s transportation network.
The Gornergrat railway station is just steps away, which is particularly convenient for reaching the Gornergrat ski area and for non-skiers who want to head into the mountains.
The Sunnegga funicular is a short walk through the village, while the Matterhorn Express is farther away and usually involves the electric bus or a longer walk.
Schweizerhof also has its own ski room and ski-rental service, which eliminates another piece of the morning logistics puzzle.
For families and first-time Zermatt visitors, I find this setup very compelling.
If your priority is walking out of the hotel and immediately clicking into skis, choose Riffelalp.
If your priority is skiing all day and then being able to walk easily to dinner, shops, the train and everything else in Zermatt, Schweizerhof probably wins.
Dining at Schweizerhof
One reason Schweizerhof works particularly well for families is that you do not have to leave the hotel every night just to have options.
Schweizerhof Kitchen is the lively central restaurant with an open kitchen, grill and pizza oven.
The Cheese Factory handles the Swiss classics, including fondue and raclette, because eventually every ski trip reaches the evening when melted cheese becomes inevitable.
La Muña adds Japanese-Peruvian food during winter, while Myoko offers Japanese dining and teppanyaki.
That variety is particularly useful over a longer stay. Fondue is wonderful. Seven consecutive evenings of fondue would begin to feel less celebratory.
I would still eat around Zermatt because the village has plenty worth leaving the hotel for, but having several genuinely different restaurants downstairs is very convenient on nights when nobody wants to put boots back on.
Schweizerhof vs CERVO vs Riffelalp
These are three of the Zermatt hotels I would compare most often, but they produce very different trips.

Choose Schweizerhof if you want Zermatt to be easy.
Choose CERVO Mountain Resort if you care more about contemporary design, après, restaurants and spa culture.
Choose Riffelalp Resort 2222m if waking up on the mountain and skiing directly from the hotel matters more than being able to walk to dinner in the village.
There is no universal winner.
There is a very obvious winner once I know who is traveling.
What Schweizerhof Is Not
Schweizerhof is not the romantic mountain hideaway.
You are on Bahnhofstrasse, near the station and right in the center of Zermatt. That is the appeal.
It is also not as design-driven or wellness-focused as CERVO, and it does not give you the extraordinary isolated setting of Riffelalp.
What it does exceptionally well is combine a stylish hotel with the practical things families actually use: large room categories, connecting possibilities, a pool, winter kids club, ski storage and rental, several restaurants and an almost absurdly convenient location.
There are ski trips where I would choose the hotel with the more dramatic setting.
There are also ski trips where being 50 meters from the station sounds like luxury.
Who Should Book Schweizerhof Zermatt?
I would put Schweizerhof near the top of the list for families visiting Zermatt for the first time, families with children ages four and up who may actually use the kids club, multigenerational groups with different skiing interests, and travelers who want to be able to walk easily around the village.
It is also a strong choice for non-skiers because the Gornergrat railway, Bahnhofstrasse, restaurants and village life are immediately accessible.
I would look elsewhere for honeymooners wanting maximum seclusion, experienced skiers whose absolute priority is true ski-in/ski-out, or travelers primarily choosing their hotel around a destination spa.
For those trips, CERVO or Riffelalp may be more interesting.
Booking Schweizerhof Zermatt
Schweizerhof is one of those hotels where choosing the right room matters more than simply finding the lowest available rate.
A Junior Suite, Matterhorn View Junior Suite and Family Suite can all technically sleep a family of four, but they create very different weeks.
