The Short Answer
If you are trying to decide between Malliouhana, Cap Juluca, and Four Seasons Anguilla, here is my answer in one sentence: Malliouhana is the resort I would recommend to travelers looking for a luxurious boutique hotel with genuine Caribbean character, exceptional food, and a slower pace. If stairs to the beach do not bother you, it is an easy recommendation.
Why I Stayed a Week Instead of Splitting My Time
When I travel to review hotels, I usually split my stay between two, three, or even four properties. It is the best way to experience them the way my clients might and understand the subtle differences that do not always come across in a brochure or on a website.
For this trip, however, my husband and son had one request.
“Can we please stay at one resort for the whole vacation?”
It was a fair point. Constantly packing and unpacking may be good for research, but it is not exactly relaxing.
Fortunately, I already had a strong reason to consider Malliouhana. A client of mine had stayed there with her family and school-aged children just a few months earlier, and they loved it. When I found an unusually good summer rate that included breakfast and an upgrade, I booked it. It was not a promotional package or a complicated offer. The regular rate was simply an exceptional value for a resort of this caliber.
So we made Malliouhana our home for the week and spent our days exploring Anguilla. I toured Four Seasons Anguilla and Cap Juluca, ate at all three resorts, and returned to Malliouhana each evening.
Looking back, I think we accidentally found the perfect way to experience the island.
Staying at one resort let us settle into a rhythm instead of constantly checking in and checking out. Visiting the other two gave me the perspective I wanted as an advisor. I came home with a much clearer understanding of what makes each resort exceptional and, more importantly, who I would recommend each one to.
Malliouhana is not the biggest luxury resort in Anguilla, nor is it the newest. Four Seasons has villas and residences that are hard to beat for families. Cap Juluca is one of the most romantic resorts in the Caribbean. But Malliouhana has something harder to manufacture.
It has personality.
After a week there, I understood why it has stayed one of Anguilla's most beloved hotels for nearly forty years.

The first thing that struck me was not the beach.
It was the personality.
Luxury hotels can become so polished that they start to feel interchangeable. Beautiful? Absolutely. Memorable? Not always.
Malliouhana immediately feels different. The open-air lobby has celadon walls, saffron umbrellas, tropical gardens, and a mirrored mosaic floor that throws the Caribbean light back at you before your eyes go to the turquoise water beyond. There is color everywhere and it never feels busy.

That sense of place carries through the property. Rather than feeling like a luxury hotel that could have been built anywhere, Malliouhana feels rooted in Anguilla. It has history and an easy confidence that comes from knowing exactly what it is.
I also appreciated the scale. After touring the island's larger resorts, it was a relief to come back to a property where everything was within reach. We found our spots, recognized faces, and settled into the slower rhythm that makes Caribbean vacations worth taking.
Within the first afternoon, I understood why guests return year after year.
Our Room

We stayed in an Ocean View Premium Room, and it managed to be spacious and cozy at the same time. It had a large private terrace over the Caribbean, where my husband and I ended up every morning playing Rummikub while our son curled up inside watching cartoons. An ordinary vacation habit that turned into one of my favorite memories of the trip.
One design detail I liked: the television is hidden inside an oversized mirror, so unless you are actually watching it, you are not staring at a black rectangle. Small thing. It keeps the room calm, which matters when the view is doing the work.

The room was spotless, comfortable, and had space for the three of us without feeling cramped. Generous bathroom. Plenty of storage, which I appreciate on a beach vacation where swimsuits, hats, sunscreen, and beach bags multiply overnight.
If I am being honest, some of the guest rooms could use a light refresh over the next few years. It never affected our stay. Everything was impeccably maintained, and I would trade a newer nightstand for that terrace and that view every time.
The Infinity Pool
Every luxury resort has a beautiful pool. Very few have one that becomes part of the reason you book the hotel.

The infinity pool at Malliouhana is where we spent our afternoons. It sits high above Meads Bay with long Caribbean views, comfortable loungers, real shade, and an atmosphere that is lively without ever getting loud. People linger over lunch, settle in with a book, order another drink, or float and look at the sea. It never felt crowded or competitive. Everyone seemed to be operating on island time.
During our Fourth of July stay there was live music by the pool, and it added just enough energy without turning the afternoon into an event. Festive but still relaxed, which is the resort in one sentence.
The pool is beautifully maintained, with landscaping that frames the view rather than blocking it. After touring the other resorts on the island, I do not think Malliouhana has the biggest or flashiest pool. Four Seasons offers more variety, particularly for families, and Cap Juluca's beachfront setting is hard to argue with. But if you asked me where I would spend an unhurried afternoon with nowhere else to be, I would choose this pool again.

It reminded me of the infinity pool at Nekajui, the Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Costa Rica, another property I love. The difference is that Malliouhana has been doing this for decades. Long before dramatic infinity pools became the signature photograph of luxury travel, guests were sitting here looking out over Meads Bay.
Breakfast at Celeste
Breakfast sets the tone for the day, and at Malliouhana it became our favorite ritual.
The setting overlooks the Caribbean, there is plenty of shade, and nothing about it is rushed. Every morning unfolded at exactly the pace you hope vacation mornings will.
My son ordered the French toast almost every day and declared it one of his favorite breakfasts of the trip. I kept coming back to the Greek yogurt. Every so often we ordered the caramel pancakes for the table because, well, vacation. They were as good as they looked.
As lovely as the food was, what I will remember about breakfast is not what was on the plate.
It was Kinseca.
Every morning she welcomed us with such warmth that talking to her became one of the highlights of the day. One morning, after my son answered something with an emphatic “No,” she smiled and said, “No just stands for next opportunity.”
We laughed. Then it stuck. We have caught ourselves saying it at home more than once.
It is easy for a luxury hotel to renovate a guest room or build a beautiful pool. It is much harder to create the kind of hospitality that makes guests feel known. That is why Malliouhana will stay with me long after I have forgotten what we ordered for breakfast.
Meads Bay and Exploring the Island
One of the things I loved most about staying at Malliouhana had very little to do with the hotel.
It was Meads Bay.

Meads Bay is regularly ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, and after a week there it is easy to see why. Soft sand, remarkable blue water, and during our stay it was calm enough for long swims and lazy afternoons in the sea.
Cap Juluca's Maundays Bay is often given the top spot, and it deserves the reputation. But during our visit, part of Maundays Bay had some sargassum while Meads Bay stayed beautifully clear. That is not a criticism of Cap Juluca. Sargassum shifts constantly across the Caribbean and can vary dramatically from one beach to another on the same island in the same week. It was simply a reminder that nature does not read the rankings.
My favorite thing about the location was being able to walk straight down Meads Bay to lunch. Leon's became one of our regular spots. The food was very good, the service was warm, and we stayed far longer than we meant to every time. We kept saying we would have a quick lunch and head back to the pool. We never did. If your trip includes a Thursday, do not miss the beach barbecue with Mystic Vibes. Barefoot in the sand, live music, good barbecue, the Caribbean a few steps away. It felt like a local party rather than a resort event.
The food was consistently excellent, and one of the things I appreciated most about Anguilla was that every one of the island's three leading luxury resorts was worth visiting for a meal. We made a point of eating at all three and I would tell anyone visiting to do the same. Four Seasons has several strong restaurants, including Lima-Limon, SALT, and Sunset Lounge. Cap Juluca has some of the most romantic dining on the island.
Something I often tell clients: in Anguilla, where you stay and where you eat are two separate decisions. The island is small enough that you can enjoy the strengths of every resort no matter where you sleep.
Turtle Cove
Meads Bay gets the attention, but Malliouhana also has Turtle Cove, a smaller and much quieter beach on the other side of the property.
Technically every beach in Anguilla is public. In practice, Turtle Cove feels almost private, because the easiest way to reach it is through the resort. The mood is completely different. Meads Bay is long, social, and made for walking to lunch. Turtle Cove is tucked away and quiet, the place you go when you want less of everything.
Spend at least part of one afternoon there. It is easy to stay on Meads Bay the entire trip, especially with Leon's right there, but having two distinct beaches is one of Malliouhana's real advantages. It also makes a small resort feel considerably larger.
What to Know Before You Book
The bluff is the whole appeal, and the one thing to think about
Malliouhana sits high above Meads Bay. That is where the views come from and why the pool looks the way it does. It also means you walk down stairs to reach the beach, and back up at the end of the afternoon.
For us this was a non-issue and arguably part of the charm. But it is the single most useful thing I can tell you about this hotel. If anyone in your party has mobility concerns, or if stairs in the heat sound like a daily negotiation rather than a walk, Cap Juluca is the better choice and I will tell you so. It sits directly on Maundays Bay and you are steps from the sand.
Room category matters, and so does room location
The gap between the least expensive room and the right room is not large in dollars and is very large in experience. This is the part of the booking where an advisor earns their place, and it is not something you can work out from a floor plan.
The value can be genuinely good
Malliouhana is a serious luxury resort, but the rates, particularly in summer, can be meaningfully lower than the other two. Our rate was a regularly published one, discounted for a stay of seven nights or more. Once I added the breakfast and the upgrade that come with booking through my preferred partnership, the total came out to a better deal than the industry rate I could have booked for myself. It is worth knowing before you rule the hotel out on price.
Is Malliouhana good for families?
I think Malliouhana is particularly well suited to families with school-aged children. It is not built around a children's program, and that is exactly why it works. The scale is manageable, so a child has room to roam without disappearing. The pool is social without being chaotic. Breakfast at Celeste is unhurried enough that no one minds a slow morning. And Meads Bay is calm and walkable, which makes the whole property feel like somewhere a family can settle in rather than manage. Our son was happy the entire week. If you want a kids' club running the day, book Four Seasons. If you want somewhere lovely where a child is simply welcome, this is it.
Who Should Book Malliouhana
You want a small hotel with a point of view rather than a large one that does everything competently.
Food matters to you, and not as an afterthought.
You want to walk to lunch on the beach instead of driving to it.
Stairs are not a problem.
You want two beaches, one social and one quiet.
Who should book something else
Mobility is a factor for anyone in your party. Book Cap Juluca.
You are traveling multigenerationally or want a villa or residence. Book Four Seasons.
You want a kids' club, several pools, and a full activity roster. Book Four Seasons.
You are on a honeymoon and want the beach to be the entire plan. Book Cap Juluca.
Final Thoughts
When people ask me what the best hotel in Anguilla is, I do not think there is one right answer.
After a week at Malliouhana, and after touring Four Seasons and Cap Juluca, I am convinced Anguilla is fortunate to have three exceptional luxury resorts that are genuinely different from one another. That is what makes the island worth the trip.
If you want villas, multiple pools, and every family amenity going, Four Seasons is outstanding. If you are on a honeymoon and want one of the Caribbean's great beaches paired with an excellent spa, Cap Juluca is hard to beat.
If you want a small luxury hotel with a real sense of place, classic Caribbean style, and the kind of hospitality that makes you slow down without noticing, I think you will love Malliouhana.
Luxury is easy to photograph. It is much harder to photograph how a place makes you feel.
And I will remember leaving Anguilla already thinking about coming back.
That is what makes a hotel unforgettable.

Malliouhana vs Four Seasons Anguilla: which is better for families?
Four Seasons is purpose-built for families, with residences, multiple pools including a zero-entry family pool, and a full activity program. Malliouhana works very well for families who do not need a kids' club and would rather have a smaller hotel with better food.
Which restaurants are at Malliouhana?
Celeste by Kerth Gumbs is the signature restaurant, tiered across three levels so the sunset view is not a fight, with a wine list that has held a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence two years running. Book six o'clock. Leon's at Meads Bay sits directly on the sand and is one of the better lunches in Anguilla, hotel or otherwise. Bar Soleil is the sunset spot for tapas and a cocktail. And the Thursday beach barbecue with live music from Mystic Vibes is worth planning your week around.
When is the best time to visit Malliouhana?
Summer offers the strongest value by a wide margin, and our July stay had calm, clear water at Meads Bay. High season runs from December through April, with the highest rates and the most reliable weather. Sargassum can appear anywhere in the Caribbean in summer and varies beach by beach, which is worth discussing before you choose a room.
