How to Choose Your February or Spring Break 2027 Destination Without Overthinking It (Even Though You Absolutely Will)

Everything else is just tabs open, pretending there is a secret third option.
Because let's be honest: if you have a week off in February or April, you have officially unlocked the hardest travel puzzle of the year.
And by "where should we go," I do not mean the country. I mean:
Where has direct flights
Where the room does not cost $4,800 a night and still require a waitlist
Where there is a kids' club with actual programming (and not just a coloring book on a folding table)
Where your friends are going (but not all your friends)
And where the airport transfer does not involve two ferries and a winding dirt road
If you are already 42 tabs deep, toggling between Google Flights and the Four Seasons while waiting for your best friend to report back from Anguilla, take a deep breath. Here is how to narrow it down without losing your mind, or your deposit.
First, a Calendar Problem Nobody Has Mentioned Yet
Easter 2027 falls on March 28. That is about as early as Easter can land, and it changes the whole shape of the year.
For most districts, the April break is not in April. It is the week before Easter or the week after, which puts a lot of families in the last week of March. Presidents' Day week is February 15.
Check your district calendar before you do anything else, because the entire Northeast is about to discover this at the same moment, and the good rooms in late March are going to move faster than anyone is expecting.
The upside is significant, and I will get to it in the matrix: an early Easter means the Alps are still open. In a normal year, spring break is the week you give up on skiing. In 2027, it is not.
Step 1: Decide the Temperature, Not the Destination
Start with the vibe. It is not "Costa Rica or Rome?" It is:
Do I want to wear linen or fleece?
Après-ski or poolside nachos?
Sunscreen or snow pants?
You are allowed to not pack snow gear in February. You are also allowed to eat fondue and post smug chalet pics.
The 2027 wrinkle: because spring break lands in March, fleece is back on the table for both weeks. High altitude snow in late March is often better than what you get in February, and the crowds have gone home. If you have been assuming spring break means beach, you have one more option than usual this year.
Step 2: Book Two Things. Cancel One Later.
If you are like 90% of my clients, you are going to book two options, probably one beach and one ski, just to keep your options open.
Then you will text me six days later saying, "Wait, is Rosewood still available?"
Honestly, it is a valid strategy. Just remember to cancel the one you are not taking before it becomes a very expensive backup plan.
Step 3: Wait for a Friend to Go First
We are all influenced. You know it. I know it.
You are waiting for someone to come back from St. Barth and say, "The hotel was amazing, but the transfer was brutal" before you book.
The good news is that I have already done the reporting. I stayed at both Puerto Rico properties this spring and wrote the honest comparison of Four Seasons Puerto Rico and Dorado Beach, which is the question I now get asked most. I know which hotels are worth it and which ones require motion sickness bands and a backup iPad. Ask me.
Step 4: Direct Flight + Shortest Transfer = Sanity
This is the golden rule.
If it requires a layover and a 90 minute car ride after landing, it is not a school break trip. It is an anniversary trip.
Look for the unicorns:
Direct flight
Resort within 30 minutes of the airport
No boats unless they are pretty and come with a welcome drink
Puerto Rico has quietly become the best answer to this rule for East Coast families. San Juan is direct from most of the Northeast, Dorado Beach is about 40 minutes from the airport, Four Seasons is about 30, and nobody has to find a passport the night before.
The rule applies to snow too. If you are skiing, the transfer is the whole trip, which is why I put together a guide to Alpine resorts you can actually reach without a five hour drive.
Your children will never thank you. But your cortisol levels will.
Step 5: Choose the Vibe, Not the Zip Code
Stop naming countries. Start naming feelings.
"We want somewhere warm, easy, where our kids can run around while we drink a cold glass of wine and pretend we did not just fly coach."
That could be Turks. That could be Miami. That could even be Lisbon.
You are not choosing between "Mexico or Europe." You are choosing between "I want someone else to do the cooking" and "I want to wander a museum while my kids eat pastries."
Step 6: It's One Week. Not a Personality Test.
This is not your forever home. You are not marrying the Four Seasons.
At the end of the day, you are going to be somewhere beautiful, with your people, and someone else will be making the beds. That is the win.

February (Presidents' Day week, February 15)
Cold and Sporty: Andermatt, Zermatt (longer transfer, but scenic and easy), Park City, Deer Valley. If you are choosing between passes, I broke down the best family ski resorts in Europe separately.
Warm and Glistening:Dorado Beach or Four Seasons Puerto Rico, Turks and Caicos, the Riviera Maya, Aruba, St. Barth if you are lucky.
Spring Break (late March, because Easter is March 28)
Still Skiing, and This Is the Year for It: Zermatt, Courchevel, Val Thorens, Andermatt, anything high enough to hold snow. Late March in the Alps means long days, warm lunches outside, and a fraction of the February crowd. This window does not come around often, and if you have been waiting to try skiing in Europe instead of the US, this is the year to do it on spring break rather than burning February.
Culture and Croissants:Paris, Rome, Madrid, Lisbon. Pack a real coat. Late March is not April, and everyone forgets this.
Sun and Sanity:Nekajui or Four Seasons Costa Rica, W Reserva Conchal, Grand Cayman, Jumby Bay, the Riviera Maya, anywhere with a kids' club and a margarita menu.
All with:
✔️ Direct flights
✔️ 30 minutes from airport to hotel
✔️ Children joyfully distracted upon arrival
The Trip That Does Not Fit in a Week
Every year a few families ask about Antarctica for February break, because February sits squarely inside the season, which runs November through March.
Here is the honest answer: it does not fit in a school break week. Between the flights to Ushuaia and the crossing, you are looking at closer to two weeks, and that is before anyone has factored in the fine print about ship size and how much time you actually spend off the boat. It is a trip you build the school year around, not one you slot into a Monday to Friday.
The Galápagos is the version that does fit. Similar sense of occasion, workable in a week, and genuinely good for kids who have opinions about animals.

One Note on Timing
September is not a marketing line. For February and late March 2027, the properties with real kids' clubs and connecting rooms go on waitlist in the fall, and the ski weeks go earlier than that. I wrote more about when to book school break travel if you want the actual windows.
