Cheval Blanc St-Tropez manages a rather difficult trick: it puts you in Saint-Tropez without making your entire vacation feel like Saint-Tropez. The Maison sits directly on Plage de la Bouillabaisse at the entrance to town, with a private beach reserved for hotel guests, a heated pool overlooking the Gulf, a Guerlain spa and Arnaud Donckele’s three-Michelin-starred La Vague d’Or downstairs. Yet with just 32 rooms and suites plus Villa Riviera, it feels remarkably intimate.

For me, the location is the real luxury. You can spend the morning on the hotel’s beach, walk into Saint-Tropez for shopping or lunch, come back for the pool and still retreat somewhere that feels completely removed from the port. Forbes puts the walk to the harbor at about 13 minutes, which is an enormous advantage in a town where a very short drive can become an unexpectedly meaningful part of your day in July.

If you love Saint-Tropez but do not necessarily want to live inside its circus twenty-four hours a day, this is one of the hotels I would look at first. It also sits inside a larger South of France trip more easily than most, which is how I usually end up planning it.

Cheval Blanc St-Tropez’s private beach may be its biggest advantage

No reservation, no car, no lunch strategy. That luxury becomes more valuable around day three.

Saint-Tropez has no shortage of famous beach clubs, and you should absolutely go to one if that is part of the trip you want. But there is something wonderfully civilized about waking up and already having a beautiful beach downstairs. Cheval Blanc’s beachfront is reserved for resident guests, with food and drinks served beside the water, and the hotel’s heated outdoor pool is open from sunrise until 7 p.m.

That becomes more valuable the longer you stay. You do not need a lunch reservation, car and transportation strategy every single time you want to spend three hours beside the Mediterranean. You can have the big Saint-Tropez day when you feel like it and then have a day where absolutely nothing requires a confirmation number.

Which room should you book at Cheval Blanc St-Tropez?

At these rates, the terrace and the view are what you came for. Start with a sea-facing category.

This is not a hotel where I would automatically book the least expensive category. At these rates, the sea view and terrace are part of what you came to Saint-Tropez for in the first place, and the exact configuration matters enormously for families.

For most couples, I would begin with the sea-facing rooms rather than a courtyard category. The Superior Sea Room is only 27 square meters, but it has a private terrace overlooking the Bay of Saint-Tropez and can connect to another Superior Sea Room or a Sea Suite. If you want more space, the Sea Suite is one of my favorite categories: roughly 45 square meters, a separate living room and two terraces facing the water. It can also connect to a Superior Sea Room, making it surprisingly useful for a family.

For a honeymoon or anniversary, I would compare the Sea Suite with the 55-square-meter Deluxe Sea Suite based on the exact location and view available for your dates rather than assuming the larger category is automatically better. At a hotel this small, where the room sits can matter almost as much as what it is called.

The best Cheval Blanc St-Tropez rooms for families

Villa Riviera, for when 32 rooms still is not private enough.

For a family of four, the Duplex Pinède Suite is one of the most interesting options. It is 90 square meters over two levels, with a bedroom downstairs and a large upstairs living area that can accommodate two children. There are three terraces, a second bathroom upstairs and the option to connect to the Pool View Junior Suite for a much larger setup. One detail I would absolutely want to know before booking is that the Duplex Pinède is accessed by stairs only.

The two-bedroom Sea Suite is another excellent family option and may be the cleaner choice if you want two true bedrooms. It is 90 square meters on the ground floor, sleeps four and gives each bedroom its own bathroom, dressing room, independent entrance and garden terrace. It also has direct access to the sea, which is one of those details that makes the floor plan considerably more exciting in real life than it sounds on a room chart.

For a larger family or group, Villa Riviera is the serious option. The four-bedroom villa is 400 square meters over three floors, sleeps eight and has a private pool, screening room and flexible wellness studio, along with the option for a private chef and dedicated service. I would compare this carefully with booking several suites before assuming separate rooms are the better answer.

It is the same trade I look for in the best luxury resort villas with private pools: the house, without giving up the hotel behind it.

Is Cheval Blanc St-Tropez good for families?

Yes, but I would choose it for a particular kind of family. This is not a sprawling resort with an enormous kids club and a schedule that begins at breakfast. Instead, Cheval Blanc does family travel in a much more intimate way, with baby equipment, children’s robes and slippers, baby purées, kids’ menus and personalized seasonal experiences.

It works particularly well for families whose children are happy swimming, spending time on the beach and exploring Saint-Tropez with their parents. The key is choosing the room configuration properly. At a 32-room hotel, the handful of family setups I actually want can disappear long before the Maison is technically sold out.

If you want substantially more children’s infrastructure, I would compare it with Airelles Château de la Messardière.

La Vague d’Or is not just a hotel restaurant

Arnaud Donckele’s La Vague d’Or holds three Michelin stars and is one of the reasons serious food travelers come to Saint-Tropez in the first place. During the summer season it currently serves dinner every evening except Wednesday, and this is not a reservation I would leave until the final week of trip planning.

Even if you are not building your vacation around tasting menus, having a restaurant of this caliber downstairs changes the hotel. La Terrasse handles the easier part of daily life, with Mediterranean cooking overlooking the sea, so you can have one extraordinary dinner without every meal becoming an event.

The Guerlain spa

The Cheval Blanc Spa is partnered with Guerlain and has five treatment rooms, with face and body rituals designed specifically around the Maison. The spa is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., and the broader wellness setup includes the hammam, experience shower, ice fountain and snow shower.

It is small, but it belongs on any shortlist of the best hotel spas in France.

I would especially consider booking a treatment after a big night in Saint-Tropez. This is practical wellness advice.

Can you walk from Cheval Blanc St-Tropez to town?

Yes, and I think this is one of the hotel’s strongest selling points. Cheval Blanc sits at the entrance to Saint-Tropez on Bouillabaisse Beach, and Forbes describes the port as roughly a 13-minute walk away. You are close enough to wander in for shopping, Place des Lices, the market or dinner without treating every outing like a transportation project.

This becomes especially meaningful in July and August, when Saint-Tropez traffic can be spectacularly inefficient. There are beautiful hillside resorts around town, but being able to walk to the port and then come back to your own private beach is a very different vacation.

Cheval Blanc St-Tropez vs. Château de la Messardière: which is better?

These are two of the hotels I would compare most often for an ultra-luxury Saint-Tropez trip, but I would not describe one as universally better.

Cheval Blanc is smaller, directly on the water and much closer to town. I prefer it for couples, food-focused travelers and families who value intimacy, beach access and extremely personalized service. Château de la Messardière is the larger destination resort, with extensive grounds and substantially more family infrastructure, including its enormous Summer Camp.

For a couple celebrating something, I would usually lean Cheval Blanc. For a family that wants the hotel to provide a large part of the children’s entertainment, I would compare both carefully.

This is why “best hotel in Saint-Tropez” is not a particularly useful question. The better question is which version of Saint-Tropez you actually want.

When should you stay at Cheval Blanc St-Tropez?

Cheval Blanc is seasonal, operating approximately from May through October. For couples, June and September are my favorite months. You still get warm Mediterranean days and the full Saint-Tropez experience, but the coast is not quite operating at peak July-and-August intensity.

If you want Saint-Tropez at maximum Saint-Tropez, then absolutely go in July or August. Just book early, and earlier still if you are tied to summer school holidays. With only 32 rooms and suites in the current accommodation collection, the categories I actually want for clients can sell out very early.

Who I would book Cheval Blanc St-Tropez for

I particularly like Cheval Blanc for couples celebrating something, honeymoons and anniversaries, food-focused travelers, families who prefer intimate hotels to huge resorts and anyone who wants to be close to Saint-Tropez while still having a proper private beach and pool.

I would choose somewhere else if you want acres of resort grounds, a major kids club or to be in the middle of the village nightlife the second you step outside. And if the beach, food and very high-touch Cheval Blanc service are not especially important to you, there are less expensive ways to sleep in Saint-Tropez. At this price level, fit matters enormously.

Pairing Saint-Tropez with the rest of France

Almost nobody flies to the South of France for Saint-Tropez alone.

Inland, Airelles Gordes, La Bastide is my first suggestion for the Provence half of a trip.

Further east along the coast, Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat is the Riviera palace I compare most often.
