Château Saint-Martin & Spa is the hotel I would choose for someone who wants the South of France but does not necessarily want to spend the entire trip on the coast. It sits high in the hills above Vence on a 34-acre estate of olive trees, gardens and cypress, with views stretching all the way to the Mediterranean. The property began as a fortified site and became a Knights Templar stronghold in the 12th century, but today it is an intimate Oetker hotel with just 47 rooms, suites and villas, an infinity pool, a La Prairie spa and one of the most peaceful settings on the Côte d’Azur.
You are about 40 minutes from Nice and Cannes, but the experience feels much more Provençal than coastal. That is exactly the point.

- The Two-Bedroom Villa, approx. 1,937 sq ft for up to five, with a full kitchen. The Three-Bedroom Villa adds a private pool and is one of the strongest villa options on the Riviera
- Villa logistics
- The villas sit across the road from the main hotel, with dedicated transport between the two. Perfect separation for some families, an unnecessary step for others
- No beach
- An infinity pool in the gardens above the Riviera, and no beach club. The coast is about 30 minutes away. If sand matters, compare Royal-Riviera
- Spa
- Spa Saint-Martin by La Prairie: four treatment rooms including a couples’ room, sauna, hammam, hot tub and garden cabanas, plus tennis and padel
- Dining
- Le Saint-Martin under Executive Chef Romain Antoine, and L’Oliveraie beneath the olive trees in summer. Note that Le Saint-Martin does not currently hold a Michelin star, whatever older articles say

That is exactly the kind of thing you cannot see in a photograph, and this is a hotel where the highest category is often not the right one. Send me your dates and who is traveling and I will tell you which suite or villa actually fits.
Why stay at Château Saint-Martin?
Château Saint-Martin gives you something many Riviera hotels cannot: space. Not simply larger rooms, although some of those are very good too. The whole hotel feels removed from the traffic, beach clubs and summer crowds below.
You can spend the morning in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, come back for lunch beneath centuries-old olive trees, have a La Prairie treatment, swim overlooking the Mediterranean and decide that perhaps Cannes can wait until tomorrow. It is particularly good for couples, families and multigenerational trips where everyone wants a beautiful hotel but nobody particularly wants to be surrounded by a scene.
Best rooms at Château Saint-Martin
Six private villas sit on the hillside above the château, each with its own pool. This is the category for a family or two couples who want the estate without the corridor.
Most of the hotel inventory is made up of junior suites, and I would pay close attention to the exact category because the views and outdoor spaces are a large part of why you are staying here.
L’Atelier Junior Suite
For a couple, this is my favorite. L’Atelier was added in 2024 and is completely unique within the hotel. It is roughly 743 square feet with a terrace, hammam shower, bathtub and an outdoor stone shower overlooking the Provençal hills. It feels private and contemporary without losing the character of the château, and for a honeymoon or anniversary, I would start here.
Deluxe and Prestige Junior Suites
The Deluxe Junior Suites have large furnished terraces and broad Riviera views, while the Prestige Junior Suites are the largest junior suites and have some of the best views on the property, with terraces looking across the hills toward the Mediterranean.
If the price difference makes sense, I would prioritize the view. At this hotel, I am not particularly interested in saving money to look at the parking lot.
Duplex Suite
The Duplex Suite is the most romantic in theory. It occupies the château’s original tower, spreads across two floors and has beautiful sea views, but it also involves the tower’s original narrow staircase and no elevator. For the right couple, charming. For anyone with mobility issues, considerably less charming. This is exactly the kind of room I would never book based solely on photographs.
The villas
The villas are where Château Saint-Martin becomes especially interesting for families. There are one-, two- and three-bedroom options set above the main hotel on the hillside, giving you the privacy and space of a house while still having access to the restaurants, pool, spa and service of the château. It is the same trade I look for in the best luxury resort villas with private pools anywhere.
The only detail worth understanding in advance is that the villas sit across the road from the main property. The hotel provides dedicated transportation between the villas and château, so you are not walking back and forth. For some families, that extra separation is perfect. For others, connecting rooms in the main hotel may be easier.
Two-Bedroom Villas
These are my favorite option for most families. At approximately 1,937 square feet, they have two bedrooms, a proper living and dining area, full kitchen, large terraces and room for up to five guests. It is enough space that everyone can actually unpack and live there for a week. More importantly, the children can go to bed and the adults do not have to spend the rest of the evening sitting silently in the dark.
Three-Bedroom Villa
For a larger family or multigenerational trip, I would go straight to the Three-Bedroom Villa. It is arranged over two floors with three junior-suite-style bedrooms, large terraces and a private pool. This is one of the strongest villa options on the Riviera for a family that wants hotel service but does not want to occupy half a hotel corridor.
Château Saint-Martin with kids
Château Saint-Martin is family-friendly, but it is not trying to be a large family resort. There is a seasonal kids’ club in July and August, generally running in the afternoons except Wednesdays, plus tennis, children’s spa treatments and plenty of outdoor space. Babysitting can also be arranged through the concierge, and because the club runs in peak season only, families traveling during school holidays should plan around it.
I like it most for school-age children and older. The hotel is surrounded by gardens and nature, Saint-Paul-de-Vence and Fondation Maeght are nearby, and the villas give families enough space that the trip still feels relaxing. If you want an all-day kids’ club with elaborate programming, Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat is the stronger choice. If you want your children happily occupied for part of the day and then returned to you, Château Saint-Martin is very good at that.
The infinity pool
The infinity pool is one of the best parts of the hotel. It sits within the gardens overlooking the Riviera, surrounded by olive, eucalyptus and cypress trees. There is no beach club here, and that is not an omission.
This is an inland Riviera hotel, about 30 minutes from the coast, and the entire experience is built around the hills, gardens, pool and views rather than access to the sea. If your trip revolves around swimming in the Mediterranean every morning, stay closer to the water, where Royal-Riviera and its private sandy beach would be my first suggestion. If a quiet pool above the Côte d’Azur sounds preferable, you are in the right place.
Spa Saint-Martin by La Prairie
The spa is serious enough to be part of the reason to book the hotel. Spa Saint-Martin by La Prairie has four treatment rooms, including a couples’ room, along with a sauna, hammam, hot tub, relaxation area and outdoor garden cabanas where treatments can be arranged.
The setting suits the hotel beautifully. It is intimate, quiet and not trying to turn wellness into a personality, and it belongs on any shortlist of the best hotel spas in France. There are also yoga and fitness options, plus tennis and padel for anyone who would prefer their vacation to contain slightly more exertion.
Where to eat
There are two main restaurants, and they are very different.
Le Saint-Martin
The indoor room matters in April and October, when the terrace turns cold by the second course.
Le Saint-Martin is the hotel’s signature restaurant, now led by Executive Chef Romain Antoine. The menu focuses on Provençal and Riviera ingredients, with much of the inspiration coming from local producers and the surrounding landscape.
One useful update: I would not currently describe it as Michelin-starred. Older articles still do, but the current Michelin Guide lists the restaurant without a star. This is exactly why hotel pages need updating more often than anyone would like to admit.
L’Oliveraie
In summer, L’Oliveraie is where I would want to eat. Tables sit beneath centuries-old olive trees, and the menu is much more relaxed, built around vegetables, herbs and Mediterranean dishes. For 2026, it operates seasonally during the summer months. This is the lunch that becomes three hours without anyone particularly noticing.
Vence, Saint-Paul-de-Vence and the location
Château Saint-Martin is in Vence, in the hills above the Côte d’Azur. Nice Airport is roughly 40 minutes away, and Nice and Cannes are each around 40 minutes by car depending on traffic.
The location makes particular sense if you are interested in the artistic side of the Riviera. Nearby, I would prioritize Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Fondation Maeght, Vence, Matisse’s Chapelle du Rosaire, Tourrettes-sur-Loup, Nice and Antibes, plus a day along the coast when you want one. It is also one of the reasons this hotel works so well inside a wider South of France itinerary.
The hotel has also introduced new Hidden Riviera experiences for 2026, including private art and cultural experiences designed around the surrounding villages and Provençal landscape. This is where Château Saint-Martin has an advantage over the major seaside hotels. You are not simply visiting the Côte d’Azur. You are also very close to the part of Provence that inspired Matisse, Picasso and Chagall.
Château Saint-Martin vs. Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat
These are two very different answers to the same question.
Choose Château Saint-Martin if you want a smaller hotel, a Provençal setting, privacy and quiet, large private villas, easy access to Saint-Paul-de-Vence and the art villages, a strong spa, and somewhere that feels removed from the coast.
Choose Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat if you want to be directly on the Mediterranean, Club Dauphin, a larger resort, more extensive children’s programming, Four Seasons service and easier access to Monaco and Nice.
For a multigenerational family that wants a villa, I would take Château Saint-Martin very seriously. For a first Riviera trip where the sea is central to the experience, I would probably lean Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat.
Château Saint-Martin vs. Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc
These are even more different. Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc is iconic, glamorous and social, with one of the most famous seaside settings in Europe. Château Saint-Martin is quieter, smaller and much more connected to Provence than to the Riviera scene.
Choose Eden-Roc because you want Eden-Roc. Choose Château Saint-Martin because you would rather look at the Côte d’Azur from a distance and visit it when you feel like it.
Who should stay here
I particularly like Château Saint-Martin for couples, multigenerational families, longer Riviera stays and travelers who already know that the South of France is considerably more interesting than its beach clubs. It is also a very good second stop after several nights somewhere on the coast. Do Cap-Ferrat or Antibes first, then come here and slow everything down.
I would choose another hotel if nightlife, walkability or being directly on the Mediterranean are major priorities. You do not stumble out of the hotel and into Saint-Tropez, and that is one of the reasons to stay here.
Pairing Vence with the rest of France
This hotel is at its best as the second half of a trip. On the coast, Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat and Royal-Riviera are the two I pair it with most often, and Le Mas Candille is the other inland option, closer to Cannes. Further west, Cheval Blanc St-Tropez is the beachfront Maison worth comparing.
For Provence proper, Airelles Gordes, La Bastide takes the same idea considerably further inland, and for a few nights either side in the capital, the Paris Palace hotels are where I would start.
The verdict
Château Saint-Martin is one of the Riviera hotels I think becomes more appealing the more carefully you look at it. The setting is beautiful, but the real strength is the combination of privacy, space and location.
Couples have genuinely romantic suites, families have unusually good villas, the pool and La Prairie spa make staying at the hotel worthwhile, and Vence and Saint-Paul-de-Vence give you something to explore beyond the usual Nice-Cannes-Monaco circuit.
It is not a substitute for a beachfront Riviera hotel. It is a different version of the South of France, and for the right trip, I think it may be the better one.
