Some hotels have one very specific audience. Le Mas Candille has now managed to impress both a honeymooning couple and one of my family clients, a decade apart. A close friend spent her honeymoon here about ten years ago and loved it. This summer, after the hotel had undergone a complete transformation, I sent a family to stay and they couldn’t say enough good things about it either.

That combination makes perfect sense once you see the hotel. Le Mas Candille sits on the hillside just outside the medieval village of Mougins, surrounded by gardens and looking toward the hills around Grasse. It feels wonderfully removed from the busier Côte d’Azur below, yet Cannes and Nice Côte d’Azur Airport are both about 20 minutes away. The hotel reopened in 2024 after an extensive redesign by architect Hugo Toro and now has 46 rooms and suites, two swimming pools, a Spa by Clarins and four hectares of grounds.

It is less “French Riviera palace” and more very chic house in the South of France where someone has thoughtfully installed a fabulous pool, excellent restaurant and Clarins spa. Which, depending on the trip, may be exactly what you want. If you have been searching for a luxury hotel near Cannes and quietly hoping not to have to stay in Cannes itself, this is the one I would point you toward first.

Why stay at Le Mas Candille?

The location is a big part of the appeal. You are on the French Riviera, but not really in the thick of the French Riviera. Mougins sits slightly inland from Cannes, surrounded by olive trees, galleries, old stone buildings and the hills of the Provençal countryside, and Le Mas Candille occupies four hectares on the hillside, so the feeling is much more private retreat than coastal resort.

And yet you are close enough to dip into Cannes when you want dinner, shopping or a day by the sea. That makes Le Mas Candille especially good as part of a longer South of France itinerary. You can have the glamour of the Côte d’Azur without feeling as though you need to participate in it every minute of the day.

What Le Mas Candille feels like

The bar and restaurant sit inside the original 18th-century mas. The building is old; everything in it is Hugo Toro's 2024 redesign.

The hotel has changed substantially from the version my friend visited on her honeymoon. After a major renovation, it reopened in June 2024 with interiors completely reimagined by Hugo Toro, mixing Provence with a slightly unexpected 1960s California influence, using ochres, deep greens, natural woods and more saturated color than you usually see in this part of France.

It works. The hotel feels warm and residential rather than shiny and overly polished, with cypress trees, terraces, pétanque, gardens and the sort of corners where you actually want to sit for a while. That may be the thing I like most about it: nothing here requires you to have an itinerary.

Why stay in Mougins instead of Cannes?

Because you may want to visit Cannes without necessarily wanting to live in Cannes. Le Mas Candille gives you access to the Côte d’Azur while allowing the trip to feel much more relaxed. The hotel says Cannes and Nice Côte d’Azur Airport are roughly 20 minutes away, while Mougins itself gives you galleries, restaurants and an old village atmosphere just beyond the hotel.

It works particularly well for travelers who want to explore both the Riviera and the inland villages rather than spending every day beside the Croisette. This is also why I like it as a counterpart to a beachfront hotel: do a few nights directly on the Mediterranean, then come here and change the pace completely.

That is really the argument for choosing a luxury hotel near Cannes rather than one in Cannes. You keep the access and lose the crowds.

The rooms at Le Mas Candille

Categories divide by view rather than square footage: garden, pool, or the valley toward Grasse. The valley rooms are the ones to request by name.

The hotel’s 46 rooms and suites are spread across three distinct areas, and this is one property where I would pay attention to which building you are booking rather than simply choosing by room name.

Le Mas is the original historic building and has 19 rooms overlooking either the gardens or the Grasse countryside, and these are the rooms I would look at for couples who want the most character and sense of place. La Bastide has 21 rooms and sits between the hotel’s two pools, with several categories offering more space, pool or valley views, and some accommodating three guests. La Villa is quieter and more contemporary, with the hotel’s suites overlooking the hills of Grasse.

For families, I would look particularly closely at the larger rooms and suites rather than trying to squeeze everyone into the entry categories. The Terrace Suite accommodates up to four guests, while several Deluxe categories sleep three. This is one of those hotels where spending slightly more on the right category can make a much bigger difference than spending slightly more on the rate.

The pools

Two pools, and they read completely differently. This is the one that fills up; the spa pool is the quieter half of the estate.

There are two, and they serve very different purposes. The main outdoor hotel pool is open to families and surrounded by the gardens, and this is where I would expect most summer days with children to unfold. The hotel’s POOL restaurant sits alongside it, which is always an extremely useful piece of family-vacation infrastructure.

The second is part of The Glow House Spa: a 25-meter heated indoor-outdoor pool overlooking the countryside, reserved for adults. That arrangement is rather clever. Families do not feel as though they are intruding on a silent spa retreat, and adults who would very much like nobody to cannonball beside them have somewhere to go. Everyone wins.

The Glow House Spa by Clarins

The spa is not an afterthought here. The Glow House is a 450-square-meter Spa by Clarins with treatment rooms opening onto private terraces, a sauna, hammam, cold pool, gym and that 25-meter heated indoor-outdoor swimming pool. Treatments use Clarins products, and the spa also offers longer wellness programs combining skincare, fitness and relaxation.

I would especially recommend building in a treatment on a longer Riviera itinerary, and it stands up well against the best hotel spas in France. There comes a point, usually somewhere around day six of Europe, when the correct cultural activity is a massage.

Dining at Le Mas Candille

Le Candela is the hotel’s dinner restaurant, serving Mediterranean cooking with a strong Italian influence. The current menu centers on ingredients such as olive oil, herbs, tomatoes and handmade pasta, with dinner served Monday through Saturday. POOL is the daytime restaurant beside the swimming pool, serving Provençal-inspired food overlooking the Grasse countryside, and in summer the hotel also hosts Sunday evening grills around the pool.

Breakfast is served as a buffet at La Table des Pins, which is the correct way to begin a day in Provence. This is also exactly the kind of hotel where I would plan at least one dinner in Mougins itself. The village has long had an outsized culinary reputation for somewhere so tiny, and part of staying here is being able to enjoy the hotel and then wander into town.

Is Le Mas Candille good for families?

Based on my client’s experience this summer, yes, and the hotel’s current setup supports that beyond the anecdotal evidence. The main pool is family-friendly, several rooms and suites accommodate three or four guests, and during summer 2026 the hotel offered a kids club for ages four to twelve with activities including baking, herbarium making, mocktail workshops and pétanque.

I would still describe Le Mas Candille as a sophisticated hotel that welcomes families rather than a traditional family resort. There are no water slides and nobody is dressed as a mascot. This is France. Children swim, eat extremely good bread, make something involving herbs and eventually fall asleep. For the right family, that is pretty close to perfect.

Le Mas Candille for couples and honeymoons

This is where the hotel’s history with my friend feels especially relevant. She chose Le Mas Candille for her honeymoon around ten years ago and loved it. The hotel has since been completely transformed, but the fundamentals that made it romantic have not gone anywhere: hillside views, gardens, intimate scale, beautiful dinners and the feeling of being tucked away from the coast.

The redesign actually makes it more interesting for honeymooners now, because it feels youthful and sexy without becoming trendy for trendiness’s sake. For a honeymoon or anniversary combining Paris, Provence and the Riviera, I would absolutely consider putting a few nights here between busier stops.

Who I would book Le Mas Candille for

I particularly like it for honeymooners who want something romantic but less obvious than one of the big Riviera palace hotels, families who want luxury without a giant resort atmosphere, couples doing a South of France road trip, wellness-focused travelers, and anyone who wants Cannes accessible rather than omnipresent.

It is, in short, the luxury hotel near Cannes I recommend to people who are not completely certain they want Cannes. It is also a very good fit for travelers who tell me they want somewhere beautiful but peaceful. In this case, “peaceful” does not mean there is nothing to do. It means you are allowed to choose when you want the Côte d’Azur turned up to full volume.

Who might prefer another hotel

If your entire vision of the French Riviera is waking up and immediately seeing the Mediterranean, I would probably put you somewhere directly on the coast. Likewise, if you want to walk out of the lobby onto the Croisette every evening, stay in Cannes.

Le Mas Candille is about gardens, countryside views, Mougins and a slightly slower rhythm. That is not a compromise. It is the point.

When to stay

Late spring through early fall is when I find the hotel most compelling, particularly if you want to use the outdoor pool and spend time exploring Mougins and the surrounding Riviera. June and September would be my favorites for couples.

For families traveling during school vacation, July and August still make sense, particularly because the hotel adds seasonal children’s programming. The kids club operated from July 25 through August 23 in summer 2026, so I would always confirm the exact dates for the year you are traveling rather than assuming it runs all summer.

One useful thing to know: the hotel and The Glow House spa both stay open year round. A quieter winter stay built around the spa, the village and the countryside around Grasse is genuinely possible, and it is a very different trip from the same hotel in August.

Pairing Mougins with the rest of the South of France

This hotel is at its best as one half of a trip rather than the whole of it. On the coast, Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat and Royal-Riviera are the two I pair it with most often, while further west Cheval Blanc St-Tropez is the beachfront Maison worth comparing.

Inland, Airelles Gordes, La Bastide takes the Provence idea considerably further, and Château Saint-Martin & Spa sits between the two above Vence. For a few nights either side in the capital, the Paris Palace hotels are where I would start.
