Royal-Riviera is one of the easiest luxury hotels to recommend on this part of the French Riviera. It sits at the entrance to the Cap-Ferrat peninsula, between Nice and Monaco, with Mediterranean gardens, a heated pool and its own private seasonal beach just below the hotel.
The appeal is not that it is the grandest hotel on the Côte d’Azur. It is that it is wonderfully easy. You can walk to the beach, walk into Beaulieu-sur-Mer, visit Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, and be in Monaco or Nice without making every outing feel like a minor military operation.
For travelers who want a classic Riviera setting without the formality or scale of a palace hotel, Royal-Riviera is a very smart choice.

Sea view in the main building, or space and quiet in L’Orangerie. For a family, that is usually not a close call.

Why stay at Royal-Riviera?
Royal-Riviera is smaller and more relaxed than many of the famous Riviera hotels nearby. There are 94 rooms and suites split between the main Belle Époque building and L’Orangerie, a quieter Provençal-style building tucked into the gardens.
The hotel also has something surprisingly uncommon on this stretch of coastline: a private sandy beach. That alone makes it particularly appealing for families and anyone who has arrived on the Mediterranean with every intention of actually swimming in it.
The private beach
One of very few hotels on the peninsula with its own sandy beach, and it runs roughly mid-May to end of September. Outside those months the pool is the swim.
Royal-Riviera’s private beach is reserved for hotel guests and operates seasonally. You can walk straight from the hotel to the sand, swim in the Mediterranean, have lunch nearby and move between the beach and the hotel’s heated pool without needing transportation or a beach-club reservation.
That sounds obvious. On the French Riviera, it really is not. Much of this coastline is rocky, which is exactly why I compare this hotel with Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat when sand is part of the brief.
Best rooms at Royal-Riviera
Ninety-four rooms in total, and only 58 in the main building have the sea and garden view. Ask for the view by name; it is not the default.
The best room depends on whether you want sea views or more space. For couples, I would prioritize the main hotel.
Deluxe Sea and Garden View
This is my favorite sweet spot for a couple. You get more space than the entry-level categories, Mediterranean views, and some rooms have balconies.
Junior Suite Sea View
For a honeymoon, anniversary or longer stay, I would look here. The extra space and private outdoor area make the room feel much more like somewhere you want to spend time rather than simply somewhere you return at night.
L’Orangerie Suites
L’Orangerie is the better choice for many families. The rooms and suites feel quieter and more residential, and the larger one-bedroom suite provides a separate living room and can connect into larger configurations. For a family, that extra separation is often worth considerably more than the best sea view.
Royal-Riviera with kids
Royal-Riviera works very well for families, particularly those who do not need a large traditional kids’ club. You have the beach, heated pool, larger accommodations in L’Orangerie and easy access to nearby towns and attractions.
The compact layout is another advantage. You are not calling a buggy every time someone leaves a pair of goggles in the room. For families who want extensive organized children’s programming, I would lean toward Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat and its Sea Explorers club. For families who want an elegant hotel, a beach and an easy Riviera base, Royal-Riviera is excellent.
The pool and wellness center
The building dates to 1904 and the hotel closes for about seven weeks between mid-November and mid-January.
The heated outdoor pool sits in the gardens between the main building and L’Orangerie, with the Mediterranean just beyond. Royal-Riviera also has a wellness center with treatment rooms, a sauna, hammam and fitness facilities.
The spa is pleasant, but I would not choose this hotel specifically for wellness. If a serious spa is the point of the trip, I would look at the best hotel spas in France instead. Here, the beach and the location are much bigger reasons to stay.
Where to eat
La Table du Royal is the hotel’s more refined restaurant, with seasonal Mediterranean cooking and a strong focus on local ingredients. Jasmin Grill & Lounge is the more relaxed option beside the pool and is where I would expect to eat most often during the day.
One of the advantages of Royal-Riviera, though, is that you are not trapped into eating every meal at the hotel. Beaulieu-sur-Mer is close enough to walk, and Nice and Monaco are easy for dinner.
The location
La Table du Royal runs April to October; Jasmin Grill & Lounge is the seasonal poolside room facing Villa Kérylos. Confirm which is open before promising a terrace dinner.
Royal-Riviera is exceptionally well positioned for exploring the Côte d’Azur. Beaulieu-sur-Mer is next door, Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild is nearby, Nice is roughly 20 to 25 minutes away, Monaco is roughly 20 to 30 minutes, and Èze is an easy outing.
Because the Beaulieu-sur-Mer train station is within walking distance, you also have options beyond driving everywhere. This is one of the hotel’s strongest advantages: you can see quite a lot of the Riviera without changing hotels every two nights, which is how I usually build a South of France itinerary.
Royal-Riviera vs. Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat
These two hotels are close together but offer very different stays.
Choose Royal-Riviera if you want a private sandy beach, a smaller and more relaxed hotel, easy walking access to Beaulieu-sur-Mer, a compact layout and a good base for exploring the Riviera.
Choose Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat if you want the full Four Seasons experience, Club Dauphin, a larger spa, a more substantial kids’ club, private-pool suites and a more secluded grand-hotel atmosphere.
For families who care most about the beach, I would lean Royal-Riviera. For families who care most about resort facilities and children’s programming, Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat has the edge.
Who should stay here
I particularly like Royal-Riviera for couples, families and first-time visitors to the French Riviera. It works especially well for travelers who want a beautiful hotel but plan to spend plenty of time exploring.
I would choose somewhere else if you want a major destination spa, a large kids’ club or a highly social resort scene. Royal-Riviera is quieter and easier than that.
When to stay
The beach operates seasonally, so late spring through early fall is the window if swimming from the hotel is part of why you are booking. June and September are my favorites for couples, while families traveling during school holidays will be looking at July and August, which is worth planning early.
Pairing Cap-Ferrat with the rest of France
Very few clients come to the Riviera and stay in one place. Inland, Le Mas Candille is the Mougins counterpart I pair it with most often, and Château Saint-Martin & Spa sits above Vence. Further west, Cheval Blanc St-Tropez is the beachfront Maison worth comparing.
For Provence proper, Airelles Gordes, La Bastide is my first suggestion, and for a few nights either side in the capital, the Paris Palace hotels are where I would start.
The verdict
Royal-Riviera gets a lot right without trying very hard to impress you. It has a private beach, a heated pool, sea-view rooms, a manageable size and one of the most practical locations between Nice and Monaco.
You can stay at the hotel all day and feel like you are on vacation. You can also walk out the door and actually go somewhere. That balance is what makes it so appealing.
